Currently working out of her Somerville apartment, Cat is thrilled to be devoting time to studying book arts and developing her work.
Cat has been making books and writing in them since she was a kid, before she "knew how." She briefly studied bookbinding basics with Daniel Kelm of the Wide Awake Garage in Easthampton, Mass. She has since explored more binding workshops through New York's Center for Book Arts and taught herself a whole lot through trial and error. (Believe me, in the beginning, there is a lot of error.)
She was lucky enough to study letterpress printing with Barry Moser during her time at Smith College. Lettepress indulges both her love of interesting texture combinations, old stuff, and nitty gritty details.
Cat takes much of her inspiration from nature--she loves pretty much everything about being outside (except maybe bugs with too many legs). In her own personal quest to save the environment, she uses as much recycled paper as she can find. The new mini marsupial journal line (they have pockets!) is made with cast-off paper left over from larger projects by New England binderies and artists, saved from being thrown out. (If you would like to donate cast-offs, please email.) No toxic solvents are used to clean up her letterpress, either.
Cat loves sharing book arts through teaching, too--both children and adults. She ran an eight-week bookmaking club at an after-school program for two years and now can be found teaching workshops at Brookline's PaperSource.
**7/20 Cat's card and journals are now featured at Cambridge Naturals in Cambridge's Porter Square. Go check them out in person!
